Healthy Home To-Do's in February

We don't know about you, but even though February is technically the shortest month of the year, it seems to be the longest! We get just as tired of winter as the next person and we are ready for it to start feeling like Spring. While we are getting teasers of some warmer weather this week (thank goodness!), we still have some cold weather and snow coming our way.

We know that once the weather is consistently warmer, everyone will be rushing to do things outside. That's why the chillier weather actually makes it a great time to work on some indoor household items!

So get ready for some projects that will keep you busy over the last couple weekends of February instead of just binge watching Netflix. Which, you could still always have it on in the background...

  1. Deep clean your kitchen appliances - Realistically, how often do you clean your oven or scrub down the interior and exterior of your fridge? This is a great time to do it. Move your appliances and clean around them, under them, and behind them. Clean off the refrigerator coils - you may be surprised by the amount of dust - you've been warned. If you've found that you've had a hard time sticking to those New Years Resolutions of getting off that holiday weight, go through the fridge and throw out anything that isn't helping your goals. We've personally found that cleaning out the fridge and wiping everything clean just makes want to eat cleaner in general. It's so satisfying to have a clean fridge and fill it with colorful produce. Don't forget items like the microwave, the oven hood, and your dishwasher. They could all probably use a clean out.

  2. Clean out Cabinets - Once again, go right to that kitchen. Go through your pantry and get rid of any expired items and reorganize so you don't forget that you already have 3 jars of peanut butter at home when you're at the store. Under the sink both in kitchen and bathrooms is also a great place to go. Make sure that there aren't any small leaks in your plumbing while you're cleaning out the space and make room for extra storage in the cabinet areas.

  3. Furnace and A/C - Did you know that you should really change your furnace air filter about every three months? So if you haven't done it yet this winter, make sure to do so! Additionally, it would be a great idea to schedule an appointment to have your A/C furnaced before it gets hot enough to use it again. They can check for any red flags and make sure it's in working order before you need to have it ready for the summer.
While you're at air quality checks - you should also vacuum air vents and registers. Clean out extra dust and breathe easier.

  4. Check Seals and Caulking -  Have you checked your door seals recently to make sure their actually keeping the cold out? Or looked at the caulking in your bathroom around your shower? These are little items that might be easy to miss day to day. Take a few minutes to look them over and ensure they're doing their job properly. If they aren't, it should be a relatively easy task to get the materials to fix or replace them.

  5. Clean the inside of your windows - Save the outdoor work for Spring and get to the interior of your windows. This is also a great time to check for any moisture build-up around the windows from the cold.

  6. Carbon Dioxide and Smoke Detectors - Check 'em! Make sure that they are working properly. If they aren't - you will want to fix or replace them as soon as possible. This is also something you should be checking every few months to make sure that everything is in working order.

This list should be plenty to keep you busy for at least a day or so. You'll feel refreshed and will be giving your home a little TLC.
